Tax Return Rejected

These common reject codes should alert you to the importance of entering the correct information on your tax return.

Be sure to take information about:

  • your name
  • your SSN
  • your spouse's name and SSN
  • any dependents' names and SSNs directly from the social security cards

Maiden name and how tax return is rejected

Married couples should not assume that the wife's last name is changed to her new married name unless she has made the change with the Social Security Administration (SSA). This may take a few weeks to get into the system.

What is my spouse's last name was not changed on the social security card and the IRS reject our tax return?

If the last name was not changed with the SSA, the spouse should use the name on her current social security card (probably her maiden name) in order to electronically file a joint return.

Also be sure to take the employer EIN directly from W-2 forms and recheck to be sure you copied the information correctly.

If you are separated from your spouse and there is a question as to who is able to claim the exemptions for dependents, be sure to clarify this before either of your file your tax returns.
