What are travel expenses?
Travel expenses include:

transportation and lodging (but not meals) for you and members of your household while you travel from your former home to your new home, including expenses for the day you arrive.

Lodging in the area of your former home within one day after you could not live in your former home because your furniture had been moved

Car expenses of either your actual expenses such as gas and oil (but not repairs, insurance or depreciation) or 18 cents a mile. Whichever method you use, you can also deduct parking fees and tolls paid while traveling to your new home.
What expenses that are related to moving expenses are not tax deductible?
Many items that may be related to your move are not tax deductible. Nondeductible items include:
- The purchase price of your new home
- Loss on the sale of your former home
- Expenses of buying or selling a home
- Meal expenses
- Pre move house hunting expenses
- Security deposits
- Temporary living expenses
- Driver's license and car tags
- Home improvements to help sell your home
- Furniture you buy on the way to your new home.
